Chippewa Farewell Song

Sung during funerary processions, a Farewell Song allows friends and family members to bid their loved ones safe travel to the next world. There is no word for 'goodbye' in the Chippewa language since people are believed to pass from one world to the next, where they will one day all meet again. People are therefore wished "farewell" but never "goodbye." Ceremonial Farewell Songs should not be confused with Traveling Songs, which are sung to wish people a physical instead of a spiritual farewell.

Because of their extremely private and sacred nature, Farewell Songs are almost never performed for an audience or recorded. Visitors are not usually invited to ceremonie,s but Chippewa etiquette welcomes anyone who wishes to respectfully attend.
