Performing Arts – 3to5

The Lied Center is committed to introducing children to the performing arts through performances, workshops and residencies. Our new initiative, Performing Arts – 3to5 will introduce three to five year-olds to the performing arts in an intimate, accessible and fun environment. This first season, the Chiara String Quartet will present four school-only programs at the Lied Center on January 23rd and 24th 2008 for pre-kindergarten to kindergarten age students from throughout our community.

The program is a re-telling of the favorite story “Mole Music” by David McPhail. The Chiara Quartet members act as narrators and actors as they weave great music by Dvorak, Gabriela Frank, Shostakovich, Haydn and Beethoven through the story line. The students will be on stage for the performance to experience a very personal encounter with the artists and music.

As a follow up to the school-only performances, Salina teaching artist, Thad Beach, will offer in-school workshops (throughout February 2008) to further introduce these children to basic music instruction. Mr. Beach will also present a teacher’s workshop that will provide classroom teachers with skills and lesson plans relating to basic music concepts that they can use in the classroom setting.
