Martial Arts
The history of Chinese martial arts began thousands of years ago, when a young woman, now referred to as Yuh Niuy, displayed an unusual philosophy and unique abilities in the practice of self-defense. In the mid-1900’s, after the Communist Chinese government took control of mainland China during WWII, countless martial artists were killed, and temples and documents associated with Chinese martial arts were destroyed. Those who survived went into hiding—scattering throughout the country, practicing in secret, and teaching these ancient ways to a few trusted individuals. After the massive exodus of Chinese citizens seeking refuge in Taiwan, the island became a safe haven for martial artists, where the practice could again flourish.
