Lawrence, Kansas native Karole Armitage returns to the Lied Center with her contemporary and internationally renowned dance company, Armitage Gone! Dance. The troupe will perform Three Theories—a new, evening-long dance piece derived from the theoretical physics outlined in Brian Greene’s best-selling book The Elegant Universe. With choreography inspired and informed by Einstein’s theory of relativity, quantum mechanics and string theory (which resolves the conflict between the very big—humans, planets and galaxies—and the very small—atoms, electrons and quarks), the work also features a multifaceted soundscape and kinetic projected imagery.
The Lied Center’s current lobby exhibit focuses on the responsibility and impact of science and is curated
by KU museum studies students Cristina Chavez of Mercedes, Texas and Amanda Millhouse of Grand Blanc, Mich.

Dialogues on Dance

Armitage; Susan Reiger, artistic director of 940 Dance; Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg, Kansas poet laureate; Michelle Heffner Hayes, chair, KU Dance Department; as well as other artists will gather to explore how dance/movement can be used to illuminate topics not usually associated with dance—like physics. Other unknowns will be addressed including why a choreographer would be drawn to certain material, how the translation from a book page to a full stage of bodies occurs, and if non-verbal performance enhances understanding of complex concepts.
