Asphalt Orchestra

Ambitious and radical guerrilla-music force

Friday, September 6, 7:30 p.m.

According to The New York Times, the Asphalt Orchestra is "part parade spectacle, part halftime show and part cutting-edge contemporary music concert." This 12-member, New York City-based, guerrilla-music force is known to unleash innovative music from concert halls, rock clubs and jazz basements to the streets and beyond. The expertly-trained members of Asphalt Orchestra combine Western classical, rock, pop music and jazz, and have a repertoire that ranges from music by pop wizard Bjork and jazz legend Charles Mingus to rock progressive Frank Zappa and Swedish metal band Meshuggah. In addition, they perform new music written for the band by David Byrne and Annie Clark, Yoko Ono, Tatsuya Yoshida, Goran Bregovic, Tyondai Braxton and Stew and Heidi Rodewald.

Asphalt Orchestra debuted at the Lincoln Center Out of Doors Festival in New York over the summers of 2009 and 2010. Since then, they have performed at London's Barbican Centre, the TED Women conference in Washington D.C., New York's Alice Tully Hall, Metropolitan Museum of Art and more. Asphalt Orchestra has been praised in national and online publications such as The Wall Street Journal and New York Magazine.
