Once every four years, the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition invites a select few young musicians to compete for significant awards.
Facing more than 150 brilliant pianists from around the world, Haochen Zhang of China and Nobuyuki Tsujii of Japan, tied for the gold medal on June 7, 2009.
At just 19 years old, Zhang was the youngest participant in the Cliburn competition.
Since 1962, this esteemed piano competition has honored Van Cliburn, who was only 23 years old
in 1958, when he won the first International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow—at the height
of the Cold War.
The complete 13th Cliburn Competition, including
the final award announcement.
