Second City: One Nation Under Blog
Wednesday, Nov. 7, 7:30 p.m.
With opening act, singer-songwriter Nick Motil
In the 1950s, the War was Cold and Sen. Joseph McCarthy saw communists around every corner. Cars were big, TV screens were small, and in Chicago, a group of hip, creative and intellectual University of Chicago students were coalescing into a group that would soon revolutionize both comedy and theater forever.
Then, and in every decade since, President (fill-in-the-blank) denied involvement in a scandal, there was turmoil in the Middle East, and an ever-changing, always-talented cast of comedians was there with an original, satirical and irreverently funny take on it all.
With a long list of successful successful alumni, Second City has a well-earned reputation as the proving ground for up-and-coming comedians. Kate Giessel, Larned graduate student, actress and member of a local improv troupe, offers her perspective on the performance.
“I am excited to see Second City because it is so much fun to be in the audience of good improv. You can really trust the actors to use their craft, their skills, their timing … It is great to be part of an improv audience because the discoveries made throughout the performance are shared by actor and audience alike ... it feels more like a ride. I think it’s a blast.”
Student Union Activities, a local sponsor for this performance, provided information on local hot topics to the Second City troupe, so it’s entirely possible that Sasha Kaun’s hairstyle, jayhawks tweaking a tiger’s tail, or “Brother Jed” and the Wescoe Beach evangelists just might find their way into Second City’s improv act.
